Ethnic Studies

Credit 10               Grade 9-11                                     Course #: 1790

Students in this college preparatory course Ethnic Studies: Language and Composition English course read and carefully analyze a broad and challenging range of nonfiction and fiction prose selections.  Ethnic studies seeks to help students build awareness about their place in the world, enrich their understanding of identity, including its cultural and social construction, while examining historical and contemporary experiences of African Americans, Asian Americans, Chicano/Latinos and Native Americans in the US. Our goal is to unpack the situations people of color experience as a result of social, political, and economic forces, while becoming more conscious as to how those realities play out, both historically throughout the nation and in our own lives today, locally.  Ethnic Studies focuses on themes of social justice, social responsibility, and social change
